hailey, on a rainy day

ground beef, thinking beyond spaghetti and meatballs.

this is an exercise of creativity.

what can you make with good quality ground beef that will really highlight the beef?  which also isn’t a bolognese of some sort?  or a meatball?  or in spaghetti?

yeah, sort of difficult right?  i don’t know… maybe it is just difficult on a rainy, thursday morning.  especially when hot chocolate and my pillow continues to call my name.  and i’m craving sushi.

anyways, tomorrow, i’m determined to be creative with my ground beef.  so stay tuned for what becomes of my dinner!  especially you, mr.sparkle!

how to get a dehydrated dog to drink water

three weeks ago, hailey fell very, very ill.  it started very suddenly at 4am – she was heaving and throwing up onto the carpet.  we bolted awake and cleaned up, then figured she must have eaten something bad before going to bed and went back to sleep.  then at 8am, she threw up again.  this time it was clear — just bile and water.  still, i thought it might just be residual, and shrugged it off.  but at 11am, she was throwing up nearly every 15 minutes… and it was no longer bile, it was becoming slightly pink.  after calling mr.sparkle and our vet to discuss the situation, we all decided to wait another hour before rushing her to the vet.  within 1 minute of getting off the phone with mr.sparkle, she threw up again, and this time there were chunks of what looked like blood and some of her lining.  that was a deal breaker for me — i threw her into the car and off we went!

when i got to my vet, they said that they wouldn’t be able to see her since they just booked up.  they sent me to another vet further down the way.  as we were driving there, hailey puked again in the car… and then again while we were waiting to be seen.

long story short, from the time we arrived at the vet to the time we left, we spent 4 hours talking to the vet, running tests and discussing possibilities for why she had fallen ill.  when we left, there were still no answers.  the vet gave her an injection to treat the symptoms and to rehydrate her.  after forking over a lot of money for more meds to give her at home… we were off!

in addition to my home grown apothecary — i had to crush up pills, create a slush and syringe it into hailey’s mouth &  shove pills down her throat — we were supposed to monitor her liquid intake.  in the first 24 hours, there was no intake.  she wouldn’t go near water.  at all.  after the 24 hours were up, she was supposed to start drinking water again, and do so without throwing up.  well… that didn’t happen.  she still wouldn’t go near it.

around the 36 hour mark, i started to worry.  thanks to the wonderful world of google and other message boards, i learned that (obviously) i’m not the only one who’s had a dog with this problem before!  so i’ll share some tips here, and what worked for me to get hailey to drink water again (a LOT of it!) and get her back to normal.

- add some sugar: this wasn’t very successful, she would see me adding something to her water and was curious, but after sniffing it and even taking a sip, she would walk away.

- add some gatorade: this was only a little bit more effective than the sugar.  she noticed the color change but didn’t want to go near it beyond a few sips.

- add a dash of milk: this is what did the trick for hailey.  in addition to the color change, i think the milk changed the consistency of what she was drinking.  she lapped up her entire bowl almost immediately.  RELIEF!!

if your dog experienced similar symptoms, you probably get them to eat right away either.  so here were some things i found useful:

- it is nearly impossible to go from not eating or drinking back to dry food.  our vet recommended baby food.  i did not like this option because it made her poop very soft and VERY smelly.  it was.. gross.  some other options include chicken and rice (no seasoning – just bland) and perhaps cottage cheese (zero fat).

- even after they go back to their regular food, in hailey’s case she eats dry food, i continued to add water to it so that it was moist and easier to take down.

hope this helps!!

Packing a Lunch

so this post is not about food at all. in fact, it is about food’s accessory: the lunch pail.

when i bring lunch… i really, really want to be able to bring it in style.

back in high school, these brown bags were so popular.  if your lunch didn’t come in one.  you were not cool.  don’t act like you don’t remember those days..!!

now in the workplace, you’ll often see both men and women sport these insulated cubes.

but that just doesn’t quite cut it for me.  especially since, i like to pack a lot for lunch.  i want a drink, a snack, some fruit, my main entree, utensils, and both hot + cold items to all go into one bag!  this is important for the “post-heating it up in the microwave-stage” and the “walking outside to eat in peace away from my desk-stage”.

so i start thinking, there must be a bag out there with compartments.  i can keep the hot on one side, the cold on another.

then while on a recent trip to canada (of all places), i discovered this!

A Mario Batali Product

What the heck!  Sorry if I’m late to the game here, but these are awesome.  It has two compartments with adequate space, and actually LOOKS like a modern lunch tote!  Had I know about these earlier, it would have saved me so many embarrassing days I brought my lunch in a plastic bag.  Le-sigh.  As soon as I got back home, I went online to search for more Batali lunch totes on Amazon… and discovered quite a few more. Click on the photo for a link to Amazon… warning: put your credit card away!!

Brownies

NPR recently aired a piece on our very own Pentagon’s brownies.  The thing is, the recipe is 26 pages long.  Yeah, you heard me right!  I think it is a very interesting look at some behind the scenes of what our men and women in uniform get for dessert when they’re out serving our nation.  Even more interesting is the amount of thought put into such a simple recipe that we all take for granted.

Thank you to all those who currently serve, and have served, this wonderful nation.

NPR’s All Things Considered on May 22

Baking brownies is one of the easiest things you can do in the kitchen. Most recipes have fewer than 10 ingredients, and the instructions are simple — measure, mix, bake.

Well, not if you’re baking for the Pentagon. The latest viral sensation to hit the Internet is a 26-page document laying out all the rules and regulations you need to follow to bake appropriate treats for our men and women in uniform.

Take Section 3.2.6 of the recipe, for example, which covers eggs. It reads, in part, “Whole eggs may be liquid or frozen and shall have been processed and labeled in accordance with the Regulations Governing the Inspection of Eggs and Egg Products (7 CFR Part 59).”

You get the picture.

Jeremy Whitsitt, with the Department of Defense Combat Feeding Directorate, tells host Guy Raz that the extra care is needed because military bakers face unique challenges.

“One thing we like to say is, ‘What would happen if you cooked a meal, stored it in a stifling hot warehouse, dropped it out of an airplane, dragged it through the mud, left it out with bugs and vermin, and ate it three years later?’” If it were a military meal, Whitsitt says, it would still be edible and maybe even tasty.

Weighing a brownie. May-Ying Lam/NPR

According to the recipe, the weight of a brownie should not be less than 46 grams.  May-Ying Lam/NPR

Brownies made from the Pentagon’s recipe will probably last about three years if they’re packaged properly. But the important question is, how do they taste? We asked Penny Karas, the founder of Hello Cupcake bakery in Washington, D.C., to whip up us a batch. And to be honest, they weren’t too good: dry, crumbly and dense. But they did taste as if they might last quite a while if boxed up and shipped to a war zone.

The Pentagon actually updated its official brownie specifications recently. The new document has been streamlined and expanded to cover things like lemon poppy seed cake and chocolate banana nut muffin tops. The length? 31 pages.

timing…

so much in life relies on timing.

are you ready to pick up and move for that new job?  are you ready to meet that special someone?  are you ready for kids?  are you ready for added responsibilities in your workplace?

the answers to all those questions are: ‘it depends’.  right?  doesn’t it all depend on where you are in your own walk, otherwise known as ‘life’?  doesn’t it all depend on one thing?  timing.

most of the time life doesn’t wait for you to be ready and just throws something at you.  you might suddenly be expecting a little one – ta da!  a surprise!  then you scramble to adjust everything and make the baby fit into your life.  or how about when someone at work suddenly quits, leaving you with double the work load and perhaps an opportunity for a raise/promotion?  all those trips and vacations you wanted to take that year.. out the window.

and then there are times when you’re ready for things to happen.  you’re ready to buy a home.  you’re ready to start a family.  you’re ready to take on more challenges in your career.  you’re ready to meet the love of your life.  but none of those things come your way.  the opportunity doesn’t present itself.  or worse yet, the opportunity seems to appear — but then is taken away.

so what the heck is all this timing stuff about then?  i think that the timing which we speak about is: God’s timing.  His timing for us… His will for us… His plan for us.  so really, we spin our wheels… around and around… but often to no avail.  some of us even get pretty far on our own path, forcing an issue and making our plans work.  only later on do we realize, hey, i’m not headed in the right direction, and i’ve missed a lot of signs pointing in the opposite direction along the way.

so here we go… the waiting game.  patience.  and let’s pray that God shows us the way.

a haircut…

… gone terribly, awfully, tragically wrong.

one day she was a fluffy, happy little camper.  the next day, she was skinned alive and looks like a little lamb.

can someone tell me… where did our hailey go??

the search begins…

one of the best parts of being a newly wed is looking for a little nest-egg together.  the wedding was the first big thing we partnered together to conquer.  now, it is time to tackle the real estate market in LA!

move on over you over-priced-over-saturated-LA housing bubble… we’re coming to pop you!  seriously.  we watch hgtv and the first time home buyers on that show (in other states, obviously) are able to purchase a ginormous ESTATE for a fraction of we’re going to spend on a 3 bed 2 bath.  haha. shoot me.

as they say in real estate.. it is all about what now kids?  location. location. location.

so in looking for said location.location.location… here are some good resources:

once you’ve narrowed it down to a few neighborhoods and zip codes… then it is time for step #2: pre-qualifying!   stay tuned on how to survive that process…

meet hailey!

meet hailey, our fur-ball baby.  she is currently 10 months old *tear* and growing up so fast!

now feel my pain here.. because this is what i have to see when i leave the house every morning for work:

doesn’t she just make you quit your job and stay home all day to give her treats and play ‘catch the seahorse’? (to clarify: her new fav toy is a stuffed seahorse — not a real one, duh)

wanna see something?  this is what she looked like the day i took her home. apologies for the blur, this was taken on my camera phone.

and that is why i love her.  lotts.  and lottttttts.
